Jo Cox Community Wood, nr Cleckheaton

Updated info...

Our meeting point will be at the back of the Tesco car park (left hand side) at the top of Crown Street in Cleckheaton.  From here we can access the Greenway where it will be level walking to the Community Wood.  There are plenty of car parks in Cleckheaton for those travelling by car but a lot are time constrained and I think the best one would be on Crown Street.  As you drive into Cleckheaton off the Chain Bar roundabout go past the Town Hall on the left and then at the traffic lights turn right.  There is a pelican crossing ahead.  Turn right here into Crown Street and the car park is on the left.

For those using public transport - Bradford Interchange is currently closed so the bus stop for the 268 Dewsbury/Wakefield bus, which stops in Cleckheaton, is N1 on Nelson Street.  This is a regular service (every 15/20 minutes) but timings for it have been somewhat adrift as a result of the roadworks in the city centre.

There are plenty cafes in Cleckheaton where refreshments can be taken after our walk if required.

The wood was started in 2019 in recognition of the work of Jo Cox MP for Batley and Spen, who was murdered in 2016.  The site is accessible off the Spen Valley Greenway and has involved a group of dedicated volunteers clearing and remediating the site before work was commenced laying paths, erecting fencing and planting a large number of native trees.  More recently a large area has been excavated for a pond which is currently being filled and planted up.  This will be a public transport/car share visit and further details will be available regarding meeting point and timings at our indoor social on 23 January.  Walking will be limited to 2/3 miles.
