Wildlife Field Visits - Past

Rothwell New Year Walk

The walk is interesting historically as it includes railway, mining, and agricultural interest as well as a site of a 14th century castle. Most of the way is well surfaced, half of it is along an old railway line but there is a field to cross which could possibly be a little bit muddy; there are no stiles, approx. distance 4 miles. The walk will start from Morrison’s car park (Postcode: LS26 0AF).  There will be toilet facilities at the beginning and end of the walk and a café possibility too. The lunch stop is planned to be only a good 30 minutes or so before the end of the walk, so those preferring a café rather than a packed lunch can take due advantage.

Mystery Outing

This year the mystery outing will take us through parkland and also fields and a small area of woodland. The circular walk is fairly easy with one short uphill section; total distance not more than 4 miles. There is access to a café and toilets. • Only minibus transport will be allowed, so book early!

Roundhay Park, Leeds

Grid Ref: SE383331
We plan to do a circular walk of not more than 3 miles in Roundhay Park, Leeds, starting from the Mansion House. There are two lakes, woodland and parkland to explore. We should see wintering birds on the lakes, also the Upper Lake is a safe haven for the white crayfish. Walking will be on the gravel paths in the main with some muddy footpaths. Easy walking. There are good toilet and café facilities.

Strid Woods

A lovely autumn walk to see the colours of the trees and bird life in the woods. We will park at the Cavendish Pavilion and do a circular walk of 4 – 5 miles, a shorter walk is available for anyone who wishes to do so. Fairly easy walking with some slopes and there may be mud in places. Café and toilet facilities are available.

Judy Woods

Wyke, Bradford. We will be parking on Station Road.

Our visit today will take in the ancient woodland of Judy Woods which borders the Calderdale and Bradford borough boundaries.  These woods have a great deal of fascinating history having once been extensively mined to provide fuel for the local Low Moor Iron Company, sadly no longer in existence.  At this time of year we will concentrate on fungi and hopefully conditions will be such to provide a successful foray.  Bird life should also be plentiful with jays, nuthatches, tree-creepers, great spotted woodpeckers and other woodland species in evidence.  The walking will be easy on the “Access for All” footpath plus other well-maintained paths; distance approx. 2-3 miles.

Old Moor RSPB Reserve and Adwick Washlands

Dearne Valley

We will return to one of our favourite reserves at this time of year when good numbers of golden plover will be gathering.  They provide a spectacular sight more especially when the sun is shining.  First of all we will make a short visit to Adwick Washlands, a site with pools and meadow managed by the RSPB and only 10 minutes away from the visitor centre.  Admission is free for RSPB members & a charge for non-RSPB members.  Café and toilet facilities on site.

Ripley Castle Walled garden and Deer Park

Ripley Castle grounds are a pleasant place to visit at any time of the year.  In autumn we can especially enjoy the herbaceous borders and vegetable garden with its unusual vegetables and fruit trees. There is a circular walk in the deer park around the ornamental lake.  The veteran trees are magnificent.  Easy walking.  Toilets and a tea room are available.

Cost of entry:  Adult £7, Concession £6, member of HHA or RHS free with card.
